Before providing any proposals, a visual survey of the existing totem sign and site was completed to ascertain the existing totem sign’s size, construction, appearance and location. From this we could determine how suitable the totem was for refurbishment and the best way to carry this out.

Luckily, the totem sign itself was quite substantial and at just over 10 metres in height it was already located in the best position for the site. The steel frame was in very good condition and suitable to receive any new panels. The design feature on the top was deemed as no longer in keeping with the look our client wished to achieve so should be removed and the existing tenant layout and sizes meant that the totem sign was more frame than tenant.

To achieve the look our client was looking for we recommended the following actions:

• Remove the top feature steel section and header panel.
• Repaint the remaining steel frame to incorporate new brand colours.
• Install new aluminium cladding panels at an increased size between the posts to increase the tenants area and visibility.

Once we had produced design and specification proposals that our client was happy with, we completed a full manufacturing survey to enable production.

Due to the size of the totem sign and the works involved in the refurbishment, a fixed scaffolding was erected around the totem creating a safe working platform.

Works on site from the erection of the scaffold to removal were completed in 2 weeks with the works to the sign being completed in 3 days.
